Senior Ryder Cup  - North East Playoff Update

The SRC playoffs continued with the conducting of the North East Region playoff at Tangle Creek Golf and Country Club (est. 2003) on Tuesday, August 21st. In a battle against their opponents, and the weatherman, one hundred and twelve golfers, representing fourteen-member clubs, participated in highly competitive better ball matches on the Rene Muylaert designed course. The top three clubs qualified for the SRC Championship being held at Saugeen G.C. ( on September 14th. The weather forecast was for intermittent rainstorms necessitating play to commence one half hour early. Following periodic rain showers, interspersed with sun, around 4:30 the skies opened up with torrential rains followed by thunder and lightning terminating the day’s play, for player’s safety. At the commencement of play, participants understood that if rain stopped play that the GAO guideline of "13 holes completed comprises a match" would be implemented. Fortunately, 13 holes had been completed, meaning the match results were official.
The three qualifiers included Barrie Country Club in first place with 18 points followed by defending Senior Ryder Champion Guelph’s Cutten Fields and St. Mary’s Golf Club, tied for second place each with 17 points. Three clubs tied at 16 points each in the tightly contested matches. Congratulations to the winning clubs, and kudos to the rest of the participants, who braved the challenging weather to compete for a spot in the SRC Championship. As the host club for the SRC Championship, Saugeen G.C. is an automatic entrant. Pictured below, left to right, are Stephen Roth (Barrie Captain), Ken Dunlop (SRC Director and SRC Championship Convenor), Jonathan Rittenhouse (St. Mary’s Captain), Stig Lassen (Saugeen Captain), Rick Ludlow (Captain, Cutten Fields) and Tom Nederpel (SRC Secretary).
In anticipation of the possibility of the matches being less than 18 holes, it was decided there would be two closest to the pin holes to ensure that all players had the opportunity to participate in the competition. Winners were Brian Hughes, of St. Mary’s, who lofted a 6 iron to 4’ 6” on the 173 yard 8th hole and Stephen Rogers of Shelburne who hit a 5 hybrid to 4’10” on the 165 yard 16th to each win 8 bottles of premium wines donated by our sponsor, Jackson Triggs Wines. In the first picture, below, Brian (seated) has shared his winnings with his teammates while in the second picture, Stephen (seated) has also shared his winnings with his teammates.
The final four spots for the SRC Championship will be determined at the Southwest Region playoff being conducted at Highland Country Club on August 27th. Playoff match ups, and results, are posted on the Senior Ryder Cup website at
