Newsletter Issue # 1
Welcome to the inaugural newsletter for the Senior Ryder Cup. Periodic update newsletters will be issued to supplement communication you have received from your team captains.
For those of you who missed it, 2017 saw 100 SRC member clubs participate in 800 matches. Dundas Valley G.C. was the scene of this year's semi-final with London's Highland Golf Club hosting the Championship. Guelph's Cutten Fields G.C. emerged victorious and team members were awarded customized Callaway golf bags in recognition of their success along with the Art Stead Trophy emblematic of the Senior Ryder Cup Championship.
Several exciting initiatives have been announced for the 2018 season.
First, the SRC is delighted to welcome the following clubs to the Senior Ryder Cup competition - Peterborough G & GC, Pinecrest G.C., Borden G.C., Bradford Highlands G.C., Barrie C.C., South Muskoka G.C., Widder Station (Sarnia) G.C., Pointe West (Windsor) G.C., Paint Creek (Port Huron) G.C. This brings the total number of participating clubs to 108.
Second, the SRC is pleased to announce for the 2018 season, the number of teams that will qualify for the playoffs is 54 (an increase from 28 teams in 2017). First and second place teams, in each of 27 divisions, will participate in the 2018 playoffs. The 108 clubs will form four regional divisions. In order to accommodate the increased number of playoff teams. The number of semi-finals will increase from one to four (one semi-final for each regional division). From the semi-finals, sixteen teams will qualify for the Senior Ryder Cup Championship. The schedule for the 2018 semi-finals is posted on the SRC website (www.seniorrydercup.com). The 2018 Championship is scheduled for the Saugeen G. & C.C. on September 14th, 2018.
Third, the SRC Board has approved expansion to 128 member clubs for the 2019 season. The 2018 complement of teams includes 102 clubs from Southern Ontario, 4 clubs from Upper New York and 2 clubs from Michigan. The Senior Ryder Cup is now the largest senior men's team golf competition in Canada.
In 2017, thanks primarily to sponsors, both the 2017 semi-final and Championship were conducted, without charge to participating teams, including a welcome breakfast and closing dinner for teams in the Championship. If you know of possible sponsors we encourage you to send details tof Jim Aziz at 'email@example.com' and he will initiate contact and follow up.
Annual Meeting - May 15, 2018
Following a Captains' survey, the May 15, 2018 annual meeting is eliminated. Many attendees felt the long distance to attend the meeting at Dundas Valley was unnecessary and Annual Meeting activities could be conducted via the SRC website, and email.
2017 saw the upgrade of the SRC website (www.seniorrydercup.com) to becoming interactive with information in the following areas:
- Home page (current news and sponsor links);
- Events (schedules, results and standings);
- Clubs (map and listing of active clubs);
- News (current and archives);
- Captains Area;
- About (history of the SRC, executive members, and contacts).
Please check the website to become familiar with the website contents and follow competition results through the season. Watch for the introduction of more website initiatives in 2018.
