Newsletter # 18 - Senior Ryder Cup - Mid-East Region Playoff

Senior Ryder Cup Playoff Update - August 13, 2019

The third event of the 2019 Senior Ryder playoffs was played on Tuesday, August 13th at the well-groomed Tangle Creek Golf Club. The combination parkland and links style holes, with undulating greens and many elevation changes, presented a difficult challenge for 128 of the best SRC golfers from the Mid-East region representing 16 member clubs. Sun and warm temperatures were the order of the day as play was completed.

The clubs were competing to join the eight clubs already qualified for the Senior Ryder Cup Championship being contested at Devil’s Pulpit on September 5th.

Barrie Country Club led by recently crowned GAO Senior Men’s Champion, Dave Greenaway, finished in first place earning 21 of a possible 24 points. Perennial finalist, Saugeen Golf Club followed earning 19 points. There was a two-way tie for third place between Midland Golf & Country Club and Legacy Ridge Golf Club with each earning 18 points. These four teams have now qualified for this year’s Championship.

The winning Captains are seen below with SRC President Gene Gordon and SRC Vice – President and Chair of SRC Playoffs and Championships, Tom Nederpel.

As with the first two playoff events, Jackson Triggs Wines awarded a case of their premium wines to the winners of two closest to the pin holes. Steve Balaka, of the Tangle Creek Golf Club Country Club, used a 6 iron to get to within 4 feet, 7 inches from the pin on the 167-yard eighth hole.  Will Loudon, of the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club, also used a 6 iron and hit it to 4 feet, 6 inches on the 162-yard 16th hole. Jackson Triggs also donated complimentary wine tasting vouchers for each of the winner’s teammates. Pictures of the lucky winners, and their happy teammates, are shown below.

Next up is the final playoff event being conducted at the Maple City Golf and Country Club on Friday, August 16th where the final four spots in the SRC Championship are up for grabs.
