Senior Ryder Cup Playoff Update - August 12, 2019

The 2019 Senior Ryder playoffs continued on Monday, August 12th at the Stanley Thompson/Robbie Robertson designed gem, The Briars Golf and Country Club, on Lake Simcoe. The course conditions were pristine as the SRC event followed the club’s annual championship.

A mix of clouds, sun and gentle breezes with temperatures in the mid – 20s was enjoyed by 112 of the SRC Central Region’s best players.

Fourteen clubs had qualified for the event with past champions leading the way of those teams that have now qualified for the Senior Ryder Cup Championship being contested at Devil’s Pulpit on September 5th.

2010 and 2018 SRC Champions, Cutten Fields was in first place earning 23 of a possible 24 points. They were followed in second place by Whitevale (2018 Central Region winner) earning 22 of 24 points. Third place was held down by defending SRC Champion, Devil’s Pulpit who won 19 of 24 points. There was a tie for the fourth, and final, spot between The Briars Golf and Country Club and Greystone Golf Club who each earned 16 of 24 points. The tie was resolved by a sudden death one-hole playoff with the aggregate scores of one Senior player, and one Super Senior player, determining the winner. The Briars prevailed by one stroke, in the playoff, and will be joining the first three teams at the SRC Championship.

The winning Captains are seen below with SRC President Gene Gordon and SRC Vice – President and Chair of SRC Playoffs and Championships, Tom Nederpel.

Once again, Jackson Triggs Wines awarded a case of their premium wines to the winners of two closest to the pin holes. Bryan Fife, of the Peterborough Golf and Country Club, used a 5 iron to arrive 4 feet, 10 inches from the pin on the 153-yard third hole.  Jeff Martow, of the Emerald Hills Golf Club, just missed an ace on the 156-yard 16th hole as he hit a smooth 7-iron to 11 inches. Jackson Triggs also donated complimentary wine tasting vouchers for each of the winner’s teammates. Pictures of the lucky winners, and their happy teammates, are shown below.

Next up is the Mid-East Region playoff being conducted at Tangle Creek Country Club on August 13th.
