Newsletter #74 - Lexus of London South West Region Playoff 22

Lexus of London Senior Ryder Cup South West Region Playoff August 31, 2022 West Haven Golf & Country Club

Under sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-20s and strong winds, the last of five Senior Ryder Cup regional playoffs, the Lexus of London (www.lexusoflondon.com) South West Regional Playoff, saw a 1:00 shotgun start at the West Haven G & C.C. (www.westhavengolf.com) on the northwest outskirts of London. The club lived up to its nickname of ‘Windhaven’ throughout the afternoon. Designed in the 1980s by local golf course architect Rene Muylaert, West Haven offers a balance of challenge and playability with a variety of small elevation changes and water considerations on a number of holes. Greens are bent grass with some poa anna. Fairways, which were running fast, are bent grass while rough was Kentucky blue grass. The greens were stimping at 10.5

Fourteen clubs qualified for the playoff event:  Erie Shores Golf & Country Club, Galt Country Club, Green Hills Golf Club, Highland Country Club, Kingsville Golf & Country Club, Kingswell Glen, Legacy Ridge Golf Club, Pointe West Golf Club, River Bend Golf Club, St. Thomas Golf & Country Club, Saugeen #2 Golf Club, Stratford Country Club, Sunningdale Golf & Country Club, West Haven Golf and Country Club.

One hundred and twelve of the SRC South West Region’s best golfers were up to the challenge offered by Westhaven with some excellent scoring.

Following the playing of 28 matches, the top three teams earned an entry into the SRC Championship at Lookout Point on September 18th & 19th.

Point West Golf Club, led by Captain Bill Stiles, emerged as the top team earning 21 out of a possible 24 points. In second place was the host club, West Haven G & C.C. with 19 points and close on their heels in third place was River Bend Golf Club with 18 points. All three clubs have qualified for the Senior Ryder Cup Championship. Fourth place went to Highland Country Club with 17 points while Sunningdale G & C.C. finished in fifth with 15 points.

Individual match results are on the SRC Website under ‘Events – Playoffs – South West 2022’.

Closest to the Pin Holes

For the sixth consecutive year event sponsor Lexus of London (www.lexusoflondon.com) offered a hole in one for a car’ featuring a 2023 Lexus UX250h Hybrid valued at $50000 (see below).  The vehicle was available on the 193-yard 17th hole. The challenging par three was protected by trees down both sides with out of bounds to the left. While this par 3 was long the down hill approach and wind direction dictated club selection anywhere from a rescue club to a mid iron. The two-tiered green was protected on three sides by bunkers and long by out of bounds

Unfortunately, there was no winner, although several players came close to driving away with the new Lexus. Pictured with the vehicle on offer are Lexus of London Senior Sales Manager Stephanie Shearsby (right), Product Specialist Gillian Cook and Product Advisor Jordon Craib who greeted all contestants with a complimentary Taylor Made Lexus golf ball and shared facts about the Lexus vehicle.

Second year sponsor, Steinberg Wealth Management (www.steinbergwealth.com), awarded a custom brand bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label Scotch Whisky for the closest to the pin winner of the elevated 176-yard sixth hole. The character-building par three normally requires a long iron off the tee, especially with the day’s winds. Out of bounds and rough guard the left side, while water awaits misses to the right. The large green has a knob in the front left portion and a large ridge in the back right. On behalf of Steinberg Wealth, SRC Vice-President and Championship/Playoff Co-Chair, Marty Middlestadt presented the award to Jeff Balsdon of St. Thomas G & C.C. who was 8 feet and 4 inches from the hole. Jeff is shown, above, receiving his award from SRC Vice-President and Championship/Playoff Co-Chair, Marty Middlestadt.

New sponsor, BDO Canada (www.bdo.ca), awarded a dozen Titleist Pro Vs and a $175 Golf Town gift certificate for closest to the pin on the 159-yard 15th hole.  The elevated tee highlighted the hole’s well bunkered green with a pot bunker guarding a front right pin placement. Heavy rough to the right usually results in a lost ball while a large bunker raps to the left. BDO Canada London branch partner Paul Kensit is seen above presenting the BDO Canada award to Mike Hutchison of St. Thomas who struck an 8 iron to within two inches of a hole in one!!

Ken Kelly of the host West Haven G & C.C. was closest to the pin on the 138-yard 3rd hole, For Ken’s closest to the pin Walter Caesar (www.waltercaesar.com) provided a case of their Caesar product and Sleeman Brewery (www.sleeman.ca) provided a case of Sleeman beer. Above, SRC Vice-President and Championship/Playoff Co-Chair, Marty Middlestadt presents the awards to Ken
